Reactivity: SpaceDrum x Sh-101
In our second installment on Reactivity, we explore how a monophonic sequence on the Roland SH-101 can shape SpaceDrum’s reactive response across all 8 drums, and how that dialogue changes when Reactivity moves from positive to negative responses.
This Reactivity jam was designed to show how the feature can function as a compositional tool across the full kit. The programmed SH-101 sequence includes a wide range of pitches, giving SpaceDrum plenty of musical information to react to.
Midway through the performance, the Reactivity response is switched to negative. The mood changes completely, while the same Style and Pattern settings remain in place.
Performance Notes:
Reactivity to the right creates a positive response, taking space to accompany your playing.
Reactivity to the left creates a negative response, making space to spotlight your playing.
Red and green lights give a clear visual cue for each drum's Reactivity response.
SH-101 pitch and filter movement help SpaceDrum follow the sequence musically.
Performance Inspiration & Takeaways:
Our team has always loved early Warp Records and R&S releases, from Aphex Twin and Squarepusher to LFO and Autechre. Fast, glitchy breaks are endlessly inspiring to us, and for this performance, we wanted to bring that energy into a SpaceDrum and SH-101 jam.
The SH-101 felt like the perfect pairing. Its monophonic sequence moves across a wide range of pitches, giving SpaceDrum a strong signal to react to across all 8 drums. With Reactivity set to the positive response, SpaceDrum plays into the 101’s motion, taking space with the positive response by building around the sequence and dropping back when the phrase rests.
Midway through the jam, Reactivity is switched to the negative response, and the mood flips. SpaceDrum begins making space with the negative response, pulling back while the SH-101 plays, then answering with fill-like movement in the spaces. It is a fun look at how Reactivity can shape a performance: fast, musical, and deeply responsive.
Sh-101 Patch Settings:
We’re excited to keep exploring how Reactivity can take space and make space within a performance. In this installment, the SH-101 shows how a simple monophonic sequence can open up a full musical jam across all 8 drums. Next, we’ll bring the guitar into the dialogue with SpaceDrum. We’d love to hear what instruments you want to jam with Reactivity next.
