Wave I Production Update
Over the past few months, our team has drawn on expertise across engineering, manufacturing, marketing, and alpha testing to create an instrument that fulfills our commitment to inspire creativity, provide an intuitive experience, and, most importantly, be fun and inviting.
Every SpaceDrum is assembled by hand at our Chicago headquarters, and we are excited to give you a glimpse into the making of our first batch.
In this week’s update, we’ll cover the importance of our wooden frame, from material sourcing to the final finish, along with refinements to the jack panel and the finalization of our control panel.
We are thrilled to announce that we have secured enough mahogany to build frames for our Wave I units. The wood comes from Owl, a trusted supplier of exceptional lumber to the Chicago area since the 1980s. Sourced from an African mahogany species and carefully dried in a kiln to ensure uncompromised structure and stability, the wood features a rich grain and natural marbling that make every SpaceDrum unique, giving each instrument a personality as individual as the artist who plays it.
Sound, functionality, and aesthetics are three of the most important elements in creating an instrument that feels timeless and delivers consistent results. With this principle in mind, we designed the SpaceDrum jack panel for seamless integration in the studio and on stage. Constructed from steel and located on the rear of the instrument, the panel features four quarter inch outputs for multitrack recording, two inputs for Reactivity, USB connectivity for audio and MIDI, and five pin DIN MIDI input and output.
Last but not least is the continued development of the SpaceDrum control panel, the primary point of interaction between the musician and the instrument. It brings together everything needed to control SpaceDrum, including the potentiometers behind the knobs and sliders, illuminated buttons that activate key functions, and an LED time strip that provides a visual indication of your position within a performance or session. Throughout the development and refinement process, we have worked to ensure that every potentiometer has the right feel, every knob fits perfectly and moves comfortably, and every button responds with just the right amount of pressure. Our team has spent countless hours testing and refining these details, and we are thrilled with the results. We cannot wait to put SpaceDrum into the hands of musicians.
Together, these efforts offer a glimpse into the care, craft, and thought that go into creating an instrument. We are incredibly excited to ship the first SpaceDrum units to our Wave I customers at the start of September. Every moment we have invested has helped us create an experience that makes music-making fun, delivers immediate results, inspires new workflows, and encourages meaningful experimentation.
