Reactivity: SpaceDrum x Polysynths
In the first installment of our new series, Reactivity, we showcase how SpaceDrum interacts and collaborates with any audio source. Reactivity is one of the defining characteristics that sets SpaceDrum apart. It lets you shape percussion in direct response to melodic, harmonic, and dynamic movement, opening up new rhythmic ideas while keeping you in the creative flow.
This Reactivity performance was composed by our Marketing Manager, Roland. For this jam, SpaceDrum’s kit settings combined drums shaped by Reactivity with others driven by SpaceDrum’s deterministic generative engine.
Kick and Rim stayed generative, anchoring the jam with steady rhythm.
Hats 1 & 2 and Snare used positive Reactivity, growing with the synth input.
The Juno-6 ran a warbly sequence shaped by cutoff and pitch movement.
The Prophet-5 added dusty high-register mallets that excited Hats 1 & 2.
As the performance evolved, SpaceDrum created a clear dialogue with the incoming audio. The Juno-6 and Prophet-5 sequences, along with the cutoff movements, shaped the drums selected for Reactivity in a direct and musical way.
The intro and conclusion stayed soft, and SpaceDrum responded with subtle drum movement that hinted at what would come later. During the climax, the Juno-6 sequence was transposed up, the cutoff opened fully, and the Prophet-5 mallets entered. The reactive drums responded with a sustained phrase, creating a clear transition from verse to chorus and reinforcing the synths’ energy.
This shows how Reactivity can become a unique and inspiring part of composition: instinctual, fast, and musical enough to keep you in the flow.
We’re excited to launch this new series and can’t wait to showcase the different ways Reactivity can take space and make space within a performance.
